The Magic of Rhinebeck
Sep 30th 2026
Celebrating the New York State Sheep & Wool Festival
For nearly 50 years, the New York State Sheep & Wool Festival, affectionately known to our community as Rhinebeck, has been a premier event celebrating the world of fiber arts. Since its start in 1980, this iconic gathering has grown from a local livestock market into a massive, must-visit celebration for fiber enthusiasts, artisans, and shepherds alike. Set against the beautiful backdrop of the Hudson Valley every October, it is truly a weekend unlike any other.
Held at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds, the festival is a vibrant gathering place for thousands of makers. Whether you are there for the hundreds of incredible vendors, hands-on workshops, fleece competitions, or the famous livestock exhibits, there is an undeniable magic in the air when so many fiber artists come together to celebrate our craft.
Wear Your Handmade Pride!
While you’ll often hear people talk about the tradition of making a dedicated "Rhinebeck Sweater," the true magic of the festival is simply wearing something made by you!
Whether it's a cozy handmade sweater, a colorful shawl, a handmade cowl, a cozy pair of hand-knitted socks, or a favorite crocheted hat, there is nothing quite like being surrounded by a community that truly appreciates every stitch. Spotting handmade pieces in the crowd and showing off your own favorite creations is one of the absolute best highlights of the trip!

Pro-Tips for Festival Day
To make the most of your day at Rhinebeck, keep these helpful tips in mind:
- Dress in Layers & Wear Comfortable Shoes: Hudson Valley mornings can be brisk, but fairgrounds walking paths require sturdy, comfortable shoes as you explore the barns and vendor halls.
- Bring Tote Bags: While you'll have plenty of storage space on our bus, carrying extra reusable tote bags around the fairgrounds keeps your skeins and tools organized.
- Don't Miss the Festival Eats: Make time to enjoy local food vendors, including warm apple cider, fresh cider donuts, lamb kabobs, and regional artisan snacks.
- Bring Cash: While many vendors accept cards, WIFI/cellular coverage at fairgrounds can be spotty, making cash handy for quick purchases.
