As Labor Day approaches, it’s a wonderful time to honor the dedication, skill, and rich heritage of American craft. Beyond the long weekend, backyard barbecues, and the end of summer, Labor Day is a tribute to the hard work and artistry that built our communities.
Here at the shop, we wanted to celebrate this holiday the best way we know how: by honoring the historic, American-made fibers and hard-working domestic wools that belong on your needles right now.
Meet the Rambouillet (pronounced Ram-boo-lay). Rambouillet sheep are a historic breed of fine-wool sheep known for producing exceptionally soft, high-quality wool. They are often called the “American Merino” because of their connection to the Merino sheep lineage and their important role in the U.S. wool industry.
A Wool with a Story
Rambouillet is a sheep breed with a remarkable journey—one that connects royal history, American agriculture, and the handmade traditions we love.
Although its name comes from France, Rambouillet has become one of the most important heritage wools in the United States. This incredible fiber began with Spanish Merino sheep, prized for their exceptionally fine wool. In 1786, King Louis XVI established a carefully protected flock at the Bergerie Nationale de Rambouillet in France, creating a foundation for what would become one of the world’s most respected fine-wool breeds.
Over time, Rambouillet sheep made their way to America, where they found a new home across the wide-open landscapes of the West. Their strength, adaptability, and ability to thrive in challenging environments made them a perfect match for American ranchers and shepherds.
Today, Rambouillet remains a cornerstone of the American wool industry. Every skein carries a connection to generations of sheep farmers, fiber artists, and makers who have valued this remarkable wool for centuries.
